Great Egret

Animal: Great Egrit

Location: Rock Creek Road in Norman, OK

Date/Time: July 12, 2008 ~ 11:45pm

Mike’s Observations: We were coming home from horse riding lessons, and we detoured along the less traveled part of the Rock Creek Road. We saw two tall white birds in the ditch on the side of the road. They appeared to want to stay around the area. We were able to turn around and approach them to get pictures. They flew over about 50 feet to the field to hang out after our last approach. Then we saw a couple more. Quite a surprise! We are wondering if they are related to the smaller birds we saw farther west.

Evan’s Observations:at first I thought it was a American white heron. we saw like 25 of them dad and i took pictures of it then we identified it in one of my bird books and it turned out to be a great egret.

Mike’s Observations: The egrets were hanging out near Majic Stables again, and I couldn’t resist getting some shots before we left. They seem to like the areas of standing water. They were relocating to a new field right when we were leaving. I like one of these shots because you can see the bird muscle in the silhouette.

Evan’s Observations:

Location:Over home.

Date/Time: Aug. 21, 2008

Mike’s Observations: The birds look weird with their necks bunched up. They were flying pretty high.

Location:Rock Creek road and 48th street on west side of Norman.

Date/Time: Aug. 23, 2008

Mike’s Observations: Another ride home from the horse riding lessons. This bird was not spooked in the least, and we didn’t even see it coming. We were about 20 feet away, and we left before it moved from its spot.

Location:At the pond near my house.

Date/Time: Sep 20, 2008 ~10am

Mike’s Observations:Some great egrets have started hanging out at the pond. Normally they don’t hang out in the trees, but this one did.
