mystery moth 12 spotted gray

Animal: mystery moth 12

Location: At my neighbor’s house on a cool early fall day.

Date/Time: Oct 3, 2008 ~5:45pm

Mike’s Observations:This was the stranger to the lantana. There were two of them. Most of the time they hovered and drank nectar. Stopping rarely. Their wings rested infrequently. The antenna are skinny and tapered without the typical knob at the end, more moth-like. The dots on the back are different as well as the hairy white legs. Kind of looks like a type of looper moth, but I can’t find a good match. it definitely has a proboscis. I’m stumped. I had to switch to a high iso to get a shot of the wings because they were always in motion.

The best match we could find on bugguide.net is a soybean looper moth. It has an orange hat where the wings meet behind the head.
